The Chestertown Arts League’s show is on the theme “Reflections”. The show committee invites artists to bring works that are about the process of reflection – both physical and mental: artful reflections from water, ice, mirrors, the eye, metals, ; art and portraiture which reflects on the past, a present trouble, a past happiness, …; artful use of symmetries in representational and abstract art; and a host of other creative interpretations. The organizers welcome creativity in addressing this theme. All mediums are welcome and the show is open to all artists. Artists may submit up to two pieces of their work to the show. This work must not have previously been shown in a CAL sponsored event. Check-in at the CAL galleries is Tuesday, November 30, 10am-1pm and the show will open Friday, December 3, with a reception 5-8pm. Pick-up of unsold work is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25, 10am-1pm. In the event an artist needs to drop off earlier than November 30, they should contact show committee representative: Rich Hall
Entry fees are $5 per piece for CAL members and $12 per piece for others. (Non-members who chose to join at sign-in will receive the member rate) The work must be properly framed and wired for hanging. The hanging wires must be securely attached mechanically to the frame sides. On the back of each piece provide: title of piece; artist’s name; contact phone and/or email; and sales price (or NFS if not for sale). Mat-less presentation of photography in a frame without glass or acrylic covering is acceptable. (Presenters using this method often spray the photograph with a protective UV coating) The committee prefers simple framing, but is open to special framing which enhances the presentation of the piece. Wired but otherwise unframed stretched canvasses are acceptable if the edges are neatened and painted unobtrusively. Please contact Rich Hall if you have a question on acceptable framing or have a nontraditional plan for hanging. Heavy pieces which cannot be safely hung in the gallery will not be accepted. The submitter must leave the work on display in the show for its full run, but in the case of a buyer from outside the region CAL may release the work to that buyer earlier. The gallery commission is a 35% donation taken from any sales. Although the show is not juried the committee reserves the right to limit participation based on space limitations, size of the piece and its consonance with the show theme.
The organizers invite the artists to submit short statements about each of their pieces which will be displayed near the piece. These statements may be given in writing at sign-in and/or submitted via email – the email address for such submissions will be available at sign-in. These artist’s statements often substantially increase the connection between artist and viewer.
The show will be mounted in the Main Gallery of CAL located at 312 Cannon Street in downtown Chestertown.
